This 8x12 rug is built from older Turkish kilims rather than woven in one piece. Flatweave panels cut from them are sewn together in five vertical columns, and each panel keeps the stripes it was woven with: grey, sage green, pale blue, cream and taupe, with a band of pink surfacing every few rows. The 30 to 70 year age in the specifications belongs to the kilims the panels came from; the patchwork itself was assembled later.
Room Fit
The rug measures 8'5" x 11'10" (257 x 360 cm).
Dining room: this size works under a table. Allowing about 24 inches of rug beyond each table edge, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out, leaves room for a table up to about 7'10" long and 4'5" wide.
Living room: a sofa up to about 8 feet wide sits along the long side with a side table at each end and all four legs on the rug.
Bedroom: laid crosswise under the lower part of a king bed, about 33 inches of rug shows on each side of a standard 76-inch mattress; under a queen (60 inches), about 41 inches. A wider bed frame leaves less rug showing.
Origin & Craftsmanship
Made in Turkey from older kilims. A kilim is a flatweave: the pattern is carried in the weave itself rather than in a knotted pile, which is why the rug sits low and flat.
Panels cut from several kilims are sewn edge to edge. Because they come from different pieces, the stripe widths and the colors shift from one panel to the next instead of repeating.
Wool on a cotton foundation. A plain backing cloth covers the underside. Total thickness is 9 mm (0.35"), the rug weighs about 66 lb (30 kg), the edges are bound and there is no fringe.
Care & Cleaning
