A recycled kilim rug starts life as another rug. Old handwoven rugs and kilims are taken apart, the usable yarn is selected, and weavers in Turkey put it back on the loom to make a new piece with a contemporary design. The yarn keeps some of the color variation from its first life, so no two finished rugs look the same.
This page holds two kinds of rugs. Most are recycled kilims made that way. A smaller group are hemp kilims, woven from natural hemp fiber rather than recovered yarn, in natural off-white and beige or in dyed solid colors. The hemp pieces carry "Hemp" in their product name, so the two are easy to tell apart.

How Recycled Kilims Are Made
A recycled kilim is a handwoven rug made from yarn recovered from older handwoven rugs and kilims. The old pieces are taken apart, the yarn is selected and combined, and it's woven again by hand into a new design. Because the material comes from different rugs, the finished surface shows soft changes in tone.
Recovered Wool and Cotton Yarn
Most rugs in the collection are woven from wool, or wool and cotton, taken from old rugs and kilims. They're flat and about 5 mm thick, with graphic stripes, blocks and borders.
Mixed Fibers on Hand Looms
Some rugs reuse yarn from chaput kilims, the traditional rag weaves. That mixed yarn (wool, cotton, goat hair, hemp and fabric strips) is woven on hand looms into thicker rugs of about 15 mm with a speckled, textured look. These pieces have "Recycled Chaput Rug" in their product name.
Hemp Kilims in This Collection
Hemp kilims are handwoven from hemp, a strong natural plant fiber. Most are off-white or beige, often with thin dark stripes running across or along the rug. Others are dyed in a single color such as blue, pink, green or grey. They aren't recycled. We keep them on this page because they share the flat weave and the pared-back look of the recycled pieces.
Many hemp kilims come in long, narrow proportions like 6x11, 6x12 and 5x13, which work in hallways and along the side of a bed. There are also small 3x4 pieces for an entry or a reading corner.
Choose a Recycled Kilim by Color
Multicolor
The largest group. Bands and blocks of many colors help tie together a room where the furniture and art don't match.
Beige and Brown
Lighter grounds with brown borders, squares or stripes. Graphic, but calm enough for a bedroom.
Grey and Black
From heathered grey pieces with almost no pattern to drawn lines and black accents on grey.
Blue, Purple and Red
Smaller groups, including blue and red diamond patterns and lilac grounds with dots or kilim motifs.
Pattern note: Most designs are geometric or striped. A handful are pictorial, with drawn figures, and a small number have a raised, textured surface instead of a flat weave. Zoom into the product photos to see the texture before you choose.
Recycled Kilim Rug Sizes
Most recycled kilims here run from 7x10 to 10x14, and 8x10, 9x12 and 10x14 are among the most common sizes. That range covers a sofa and chairs in a living room or a dining table with the chairs pulled out. A few oversized rugs go beyond 12x15 for open-plan spaces. For hallways, there are some runners about 3 feet wide and 9 to 11 feet long, plus the longer hemp kilims described above. Our rug size guide for every room has layouts with measurements.
Size note: Size names are rounded to the nearest standard size, so a rug listed as 10x14 can be a few inches off in either direction. Plan with the exact measurements on the product page.
Care Tips for Recycled and Hemp Kilims
Vacuum with suction only, because a spinning brush can catch and pull flat-woven yarn. Turn the rug around every few months so foot traffic and sunlight even out. If something spills, blot it straight away with a clean white cloth and a little cold water, working from the edge of the stain inward. A thin rug pad stops a flat kilim from sliding on wood or tile.
Care note: Don't soak or steam clean these rugs. For a deep clean, use a professional rug cleaner who hand-washes handwoven rugs.

Why does the color look slightly uneven?
The yarn comes from different old rugs, so its color was never uniform. Those soft changes in tone are part of how a recycled kilim is made, not a flaw.
