Shop Living Room Rugs by Size, Style, and Material
Shop handmade living room rugs for sofas, seating areas, and open-plan rooms. Choose 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, large, and oversized rugs in wool, vintage, kilim, Oushak, and modern styles.
Living Room Scale & Placement
A living room rug should connect the sofa, chairs, and coffee table without making the room feel crowded. A 6x9 rug can work for compact seating areas, an 8x10 rug is a strong choice for many sofa layouts, and a 9x12 or larger rug is better for open spaces where the furniture sits fully on the rug.
For the most balanced look, leave a visible border of flooring around the rug and let at least the front legs of the main seating pieces rest on the rug.
Shop by Living Room Size
6x9 Rugs
Best for apartments, smaller seating areas, and rooms where the front sofa legs sit on the rug.
8x10 Rugs
A versatile size for standard living rooms with a sofa, coffee table, and one or two accent chairs.
9x12 and Large Rugs
Ideal for larger rooms, sectionals, and open-plan layouts where the rug needs to define the full seating area.
Style Paths for the Room
Choose the rug style based on the mood of the room. Neutral wool rugs create a calm foundation, vintage Turkish and Persian rugs add character, Oushak rugs soften the space with muted palettes, and kilims bring low-profile woven texture under furniture.
For a modern living room, a handmade rug does not need to look new or plain. A faded vintage rug, a soft-toned Oushak, or a flatwoven kilim can ground clean furniture and make the room feel more collected.
The Durability of Natural Wool
Wool is a practical material for busy living rooms because it has natural resilience and holds texture well with regular use. Low-pile vintage rugs and flatwoven kilims are also useful under sofas and coffee tables because they sit close to the floor and are easy to place around furniture.
Buyer Notes
Size Note
Check the exact product dimensions before ordering. Handmade rugs can vary slightly, and the right fit depends on your sofa width and room layout.
Product Note
Many pieces are individually photographed and selected, so the rug you choose should be reviewed by its own photos, colors, and measurements.
Care Note
Vacuum with suction only, rotate the rug for even wear, blot spills quickly, and use professional rug washing when needed.
Living Room Rugs FAQ
What size rug is best for a living room?
For many living rooms, 8x10 is a practical starting point. Smaller rooms may work with 6x9, while larger seating areas often look better with 9x12 or oversized rugs.
Is 8x10 or 9x12 better for a living room?
An 8x10 rug usually works when the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. A 9x12 rug is better when you want the main furniture pieces to sit fully on the rug.
Should living room furniture sit on the rug?
Yes. At least the front legs of the main seating pieces should sit on the rug so the sofa, chairs, and coffee table feel connected.
Are wool rugs good for living rooms?
Yes. Wool rugs are a strong option for living rooms because they are naturally resilient, comfortable underfoot, and suitable for regular use.
How do I care for a handmade living room rug?
Use suction-only vacuuming, rotate the rug every few months, and blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid steam cleaning, harsh chemicals, and machine washing.
