How to Choose a 6x9 Rug
Before you order, use painter's tape to mark the outline of the rug you choose on the floor, using its listed width and length. Then check where the furniture legs land or how much rug shows beside the bed.
Most rugs here are 30 years old or more. That includes the overdyed, washed, and hand-carved Turkish pile rugs, the Anatolian and Kayseri pieces, and the Moldovan kilims. Choose by Weave, below, gives the age of the newer ones, including the Oushak and Moroccan rugs and the dhurries.
Size note. Lay the 9 ft side along the sofa or across the foot of the bed. The 6 ft side then sets how far the rug reaches toward the armchair, past the desk, or down the bed.
Where a 6x9 Rug Fits
Living room
A 6x9 runs past both ends of a 7 ft sofa. If an armchair faces the sofa, check that the front legs of both pieces land on the rug. For a full seating group, with chairs on more than one side, see 6x9 to 8x10 rugs.
Bedroom
Laid across the foot of a full bed, a 6x9 shows about 2 to 2½ ft of rug on each side. For a queen bed, our bedroom rug size guide suggests at least an 8x10, and for a king a 9x12.
Dining area
Chairs need about 2 ft of rug past each table edge, so on a 6x9 the table can be only about 18 to 30 inches wide, depending on the rug's exact width. That suits a small breakfast table; most dining tables need an 8x10. See our dining room rug guide.
Home office
Laid with the long side along a desk 2 ft deep, a 6x9 leaves about 3½ to 4½ ft of rug in front of it. Measure from the back of the desk to the farthest point the chair rolls back, and compare that with the listed width.
Nearby sizes. A 5x9 is about a foot narrower and a 6x8 about a foot shorter, if a 6x9 is a little too big for the room. For a full seating group, a dining table, or a queen bed, an 8x10 is the better size. To compare 5x8, 5x9, 6x8, and 6x9 side by side, see 5x8 to 6x9 rugs.

Thickness note. Most rugs here are about a quarter inch (5 to 8 mm) thick. If a door opens over the rug, check that the listed thickness, plus a pad if you use one, is less than the gap under it. The cards below give the thickness of each group.
Overdyed, carved, and washed pile
Hand-knotted Turkish rugs, 30 to 70 years old. Some were dyed a new color, and the old pattern often still shows through; others were washed down to softer colors. The carved rugs were overdyed first and then carved by hand, so the pattern is slightly raised. They are about 0.28 in (7 mm) thick, and the rest about 0.2 in (5 mm). See all overdyed rugs.
Anatolian, Kayseri, Oushak, and Moroccan pile
Hand-knotted wool rugs. The Kayseri rugs are 50 to 70 years old and about 0.2 in (5 mm) thick; the Anatolian rugs are 30 to 80 years old and 0.31 to 0.39 in (8 to 10 mm). The Oushak rugs are newer, 10 to 20 years old, and about 0.31 in (8 mm). The Moroccan rugs, also 10 to 20 years old, are among the thickest here, about 0.47 in (12 mm).
Kilims
Flatwoven, with no pile. The Oushak kilims come from the Uşak region of western Türkiye and are 20 to 30 years old; the Moldovan kilims are 40 to 50. Others are rag kilims woven from strips of fabric, recycled kilims, and kilims of hemp or goat hair; goat hair is coarse and can prickle bare feet. Most kilims here are about 0.24 in (6 mm) thick. See all kilim rugs.
Dhurries and needlepoint
The dhurries are flatwoven in India from cotton and wool and are 10 to 20 years old. The Aubusson and needlepoint kilims have European floral patterns. They are 20 to 30 years old and among the thinnest here, about 0.16 in (4 mm). See all Aubusson and needlepoint rugs.
Common Questions About 6x9 Rugs
Is a 6x9 rug big enough for my living room?
Yes, for a sofa with one armchair facing it, as long as the front legs of both pieces land on the rug. With a 7 ft sofa, a 6x9 runs about 9 to 15 inches past each end. If chairs sit on two sides of the sofa, an 8x10 is the better size.
Will a 6x9 rug fit under a queen or king bed?
Not as a full under-bed rug, but it works across the foot of the bed. With the 9 ft side running crosswise, a 6x9 shows about 2 ft of rug on each side of a queen mattress. Beside a king it shows about 1 to 1½ ft, and less beside a wider frame. For a rug that reaches past the nightstands, our bedroom rug size guide lists the larger sizes.
How big is a 6x9 rug in inches?
72 by 108 inches. Size names are rounded to the nearest foot, so check each listing for the exact size. Our rug size guide covers the other common sizes.
Are these rugs all wool, hand-knotted, and vintage?
Not all of them. The pile rugs are hand-knotted, most of them in wool on a cotton foundation. The kilims and dhurries are flatwoven, the Aubusson and needlepoint pieces have no pile either, and a few pieces are hand-loomed. Some kilims are hemp or goat hair. Most rugs here are 30 years old or more, but some are newer; Choose by Weave, above, gives the age of each type. Each listing gives the material and age of the rug.
How should I clean a 6x9 rug?
Blot a spill right away with a clean, dry white cloth, without rubbing. After blotting, leave the cleaning to a professional rug cleaner; that goes for kilims and dhurries too. Don't machine-wash or soak a handmade rug at home. Our rug care guide covers vacuuming, sun, moisture, and storage.
