This method uses existing carpets rather than newly made carpets. Wool on cotton or wool on wool double knotted carpets are preferred for overdyed. Since Turkish carpets are double knotted, the structure that comprises of the warp, the weft and the knot is solid. How were Overdyed Rugs made?
These rugs were produced 40 - 60 years ago in Anatolia / Turkey by using fully natural wool. Overdyed rugs are made from mainly rugs that come from two cities. One is Demirci area of the city of Manisa and the other is İsparta region in western Anatolia. These rugs were named after the region they were made in; Demirci rugs and isparta rugs. These rugs are preferred for the over dyeing procedure since their quality and weave are similar. Another reason for these becoming widely used in the over dyeing procedure is that they come in standard sizes such as 4 X 6, 5 X 8, 6 X 9, and 8 X 10 and they were produced in large quantities in 1960’s hence they are relatively easier to obtain. Overdyed rugs are becoming more popular each passing day in Europe and USA being widely preferred by designers.
