A kilim is defined as “It is a weaving type that the weft threads the two layered warp. In this kind of weaving the warp is fully covered by the weft.”

Carpets are an irreplaceable piece of home decor. Although generally overlooked as a piece of woven home decor, rugs have a rich history embedded in versatile cultures. Centuries ago, before sedentary life became widespread, rugs were crucial in nomadic peoples’ lives. Rugs were used for purposes of isolation as well as to embellish the inside of tents. They were widely used by nomadic peoples also because they were easily carried on horseback when moving from one location to the next.

Our collection of vintage carpets are 30 - 60 year old double knotted Turkish carpets. The materials are usually cotton and wool; the structure is wool on wool or wool on cotton.

The style is medallion, geometric or floral. Because vintage carpets are preexisting rugd and are not produced from scratch, it is difficult to find a different size of a desired carpet. Therefore, every rug is unique.

There are two kinds of knots used in handmade rugs. The double knot, also known as the ‘Turkish Knot’ and the single knot, also known as the ‘Persian Knot’. Turkish Knot is a symmetrical knot and in Anatolia it is also known as ‘Ghiordes Knot’. Turkish Knot is used in rugs made in Anatolia, Caucusus, Azerbeijan and North East Iran.  Turkish Knot is wrapped around two warp lines symmetrically, pulled out from the middle, tightened and the ends are cut. This way the knot is wrapped around two warp lines forming a solid structure.

Hereke

Hereke rugs are named after the town they are made in. They are made of wool and silk with an average of 100 knots up to 400 knots in every centimeter square. They are very fine and valuable weavings.

Tree of Life: It is the symbol of eternity.
