Modern Kilim Rugs

The word ‘kilim’ is of Turkish origin and it points to a woven textile that has no pile, used as a floor covering or wall hanging. As they are flat woven and they do not have a pile they are thinner. Hand woven kilim rugs are dyed with natural vegetable dyes and they carry symbolism used for generations in their regions. They are made of wool, goat hair or cotton. Kilim is one of the oldest types of woven textile. Handwoven kilim rugs are made in Central Asia, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Caucasus, China, North Africa, some parts of Europe and Turkey.

What are Modern Kilim Rugs?

Modern Kilim Rugs are made using centuries old dyeing and weaving techniques that would match our present day’s design approach. Colors, motifs and combinations of shapes are designed so that these woven textiles can easily be used in the modern home. In the making of these kilims natural wool and cotton dyed with natural dyes are used. Once the wool is extracted it is cleaned and then made into bundles to be handspun. This way the fibers in the strands stay intact. Machine woven wool breaks the fiber in the wool resulting in the curving of the wool. This is the reason that handspun wool preserves its colors and shine for a much longer time than machine spun wool. Kilim rugs that are made fully of natural materials have various color combinations and bold motifs. Kilim rugs use repeating geometric such as square, rectangle, triangle, circle, polygon, crystal, star, straight line and zig zag creating a feeling of infinity in the design. There are also modern rugs that reinterpret old designs in contemporary style.

Modern Kilim Rugs are one of the many choices that work great in the modern home as they have modern designs and they are made of fully natural materials.

What are Traditional Kilim Rugs?

The most distinctive characteristic of traditional kilims are their colors and motifs. They carry colors and motifs unique to their regions. Even though certain new designs have taken their place as a part of the overall design, the unique symbols of regions have been preserved over centuries. To give an example, Rose Kilims are a type of kilim woven in the east of Europe, in Romania and Moldavia. Ones with black and brown backgrounds are made of lamb or goat hair. One in lighter colors are made of cotton. They are predominantly embellished with flower designs. Ones with medallion designs are also embellished with smaller flower designs. We do not see other kinds of designs on kilims of these areas.

Even though Dhurrie kilims use the same techniques with traditional Turkish kilims you will realise at your first glance that they are a completely unique type of kilim. This is due to a couple of reasons. First, Dhurrie kilims have simpler designs. The design elements, motifs used are not as crowded and dense as they are on Turkish kilims. Another reason is coloring. Anatolian weavings, kilims are usually vibrant, quite colorful. Even though different regions in Turkey have different design attributes when you look at Turkish kilims it is quite obvious that color is a dominant element and it is not used scarcely. Dhurrie kilims on the other hand are made in lighter colors. They are simpler and in more faded tones.
